Message analysis with control group comparison, but the whole 'dry starting' is a myth.

1) Oil filters are manufactured with a check-valve assembly that keeps oil from draining out of the lubrication system's galleys and other pipes.

2) When you turn your car off, significant oil remains in the journals, it does not 'run out' of the journal.

3) When you start your engine, the crankshaft's centrifugal effect drives oil in the crank into the rod journals immediately.

4) Turbocharger bearing assembliles retain significant oil in all their small galleys and in the bearings themselves.

5) When you start your engine, oil pressure is achieved nearly instantaneously. As soon as the engine begins rotating during the startup sequence, oil is already flowing.

6) For a very brief instant during startup, the engine is only turning around 250RPM so oil pressure generated is very small, but startup ignition timing is very low (5 degrees) so when a cylinder fires, very little energy is driving the bearings into the journals and the oil's film strength supercedes this force by several magnitudes. Effectively, there is no additional wear felt at any bearing journal during startup.

What typically is the biggest problem with cold starting is the oxidation-reduction of the fuel is at lower temperatures and it forms rather caustic compounds which dissolve the cylinder/rings/valves and seats. If you were to do anything, put a system of thermal wiring all through the block and plug your car in overnight to keep the engine at around 180F. That way it will never be subject to cold starts. Of course, this is an 'over the top' modification, but what I'm getting at is that there are many other more important and real engine-deteriorating factors to consider when trying to maintain engine longevity... My $.02.
